13/03/2020 UPDATE: From Theresa Villiers, In the light of today’s developments on Covid-19 Coronavirus, the lobby against the Mayor’s tube station car park plans has had to be postponed. It will not therefore be taking place on Thursday after all.

Whilst many public gatherings will continue to go ahead next week, it seems unlikely that the event would be able to generate significant numbers, given concerns about Covid-19. I very much hope to be able to fix a new date for the lobby on this crucial issue once we have got through the epidemic.
I know that many of you are steadfastly opposed to the Mayor’s plans to build over station car parks in the suburbs and I will continue to update you on the campaign to stop them from going ahead.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE: We have received a message from Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, inviting all who are concerned about the Mayor’s plans to build over car parks at a number of suburban stations to attend an event at City Hall on Thursday 19th March at 08:45.

I am getting in touch about the Mayor’s plans to build over car parks in a number of suburban stations, including in Barnet, Enfield and Harrow. The Mayor’s proposals for high rise intensive development and removal of car parking spaces will cause major problems.

They will make life far harder for commuters just trying to get to work to provide for their families and they will cause even greater levels overspill parking in residential streets. It will also be more difficult for people with reduced mobility to get on to the tube network.
Many of my constituents in Barnet are strongly opposed to what the Mayor and TfL want to do and I know that these concerns are shared by other suburban areas targeted for this kind of development.
I have raised this issue at Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament. But to do more, I’m asking for your help. I want the campaigns around the different boroughs affected to be working together. So I’m asking people to visit City Hall to come together to speak up for the suburbs and call on the Mayor to drop his damaging proposals.
I hope you will be able to come along. Please encourage anyone you know who is against the loss of station car parks to be there too. Please forward this email to anyone you know who is involved in the campaign to save your local station car park.

We will then go into City Hall to watch Mayor’s Question Time where GLA members opposing the Mayor’s car park plans will raise this issue. If there is a residents’ group you would like mentioned by GLA members during Mayor’s Questions, please let me know.
The event will conclude at the end of Mayor’s Question Time at around 1230 but there is no problem with people leaving earlier if they want to.
I hope to see you on outside City Hall next week! This is the last Mayor’s Question Time before the London elections and it is our chance to make the suburbs heard!!!!

Theresa Villiers
PS I fully appreciate the concern felt about Coronavirus but there is no reason to believe that this event would heighten the risk of the spread of the condition. The public health authorities have not asked for cancellation of public gatherings.
