Their areas of expertise are varied, including applied physics, art, music, education, law, dentistry, medicine and office management. This wide-ranging expertise contributes significantly to the effectiveness of the committee.

Committee members:

Valerie Mellor - President

Plymouth, Devon, was my birthplace.  I left the city in 1959 to attend King’s College London University where I obtained a BA (Hons) in French with subsidiary Italian.  I became a qualified graduate secretary, but later switched to education and taught in Harrow secondary schools for 27 years.  With my family, I moved to Northwood in 1977.

After serving for 26 years on the Northwood Residents’ Association Executive Committee with a special interest in health issues, I decided to retire in 2011.  It was a surprise and a great honour to be proposed as Vice-President; I will do my best to support the Executive Committee and its Chairman.

Valerie was elected as President at the AGM in April 2019.

Tony Ellis - Chairman

I was born in Leicester in 1942, am married with 3 children and 5 grandchildren and have lived in Northwood since 1990. During my business career as a Chartered Accountant I worked in the UK, 4 African countries and Kazakhstan. Since retirement I have taken an active interest in the local community. Currently I am a member of the council of governors of Hillingdon Hospital Foundation Trust representing the north of the Borough; Secretary and active volunteer of Northwood Live at Home; committee member of the Northwood Residents' Association; and a member of Community Voice.

I believe passionately that residents have rights and responsibilities - the right to be consulted about change, and the responsibility to take part in that consultation - and that politicians and public employees should be held accountable for their actions.

My leisure activities include gardening, reading, good wine and food and enjoying the countryside.

Miles Gillman - Vice Chairman

Having lived in Northwood all my life, and now with my own family, I am keen that the area's unique character is not eroded away.

David Blowers - Treasurer

I have lived in Northwood since 1987 and am keen to preserve this residential gem in the way residents enjoy and expect.  I spent many years commuting to London and share the concerns over the Metropolitan line and the service of TfL. More recently, I now drive to work so am well acquainted with the traffic issues within Northwood and the time taken to get onto the M25.

The aims and objectives of the NRA are highly desirable for all residents and I am fully supportive of them.

Paul Barker - Chief Road Steward

I was born in Middlesex and attended Merchant Taylors School in the 50s, cycling through Northwood to get there. I got my B Sc in Electronics and Telecomms from London University, and initially worked on the Engineering side of the BBC.

My wife and I are now in our 3rd Northwood house, interspersed with a 3-year period in the USA, where I gravitated to the Sales / Marketing side, before starting and building up their International Division (covering literally millions of miles in 747s during the 70s and 80s).

I now run my own business consultancy working with SMEs looking to do International business, plus I chair the Greater London Region of a consulting group. We have a married son and daughter, 4 grandchildren, and try to play golf at Moor Park, and Bridge, though nowadays purely socially, and I am a fanatical Rugby Union supporter..

Having been first a Road Steward, then Area Road Steward, I was honoured by the NRA asking me to take over as Chief Road Steward, and serve on the Committee.
