A new ‘buddy’ volunteer support role has launched at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, to assist patients who require extra support with attending their appointments or cancer treatments.

A ‘buddy’ volunteer acts as a host for visitors to the centre providing guidance and support in a number of different ways, including by:

•    meeting them when they arrive,
•    helping them locate departments,
•    bringing them drinks and refreshments,
•    keeping them company.

A retirement housing scheme in Northwood is today urging older people living alone in the community to take extra care in the hot weather.

Claire Cunningham, Scheme Manager, from Anchor's St John's Court in Murray Road has offered advice as temperatures expected to soar across the country. She will be taking extra steps to ensure that the residents are staying cool and keeping hydrated in the heat.

Part of Vicarage Road, which is the main route to Watford General Hospital, is closed until further notice following a critical sewer failure related to a sink hole appearing.  Emergency repairs are taking place between Harwoods Road and A4178 Farraline Road and Merton Road.  Patients attending the hospital are urged to leave more time than usual to travel to their appointments due to the traffic congestion in the local area.

The Mount Vernon Cancer Centre thrives on the contribution of our volunteers who support patients and visitors at the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre, Michael Sobell Hospice as well as within the specialist cancer centre itself. There is a huge variety of volunteer roles across the centre, from gardeners to administrators and patient supporters to fundraisers. You are welcome to drop in to see us at one of our monthly Open Days. These will be held on the 1st of every month. Please contact us on the numbers below to find out more information. We would love to discuss with you what Volunteer opportunity may suit you the best.

If you travel within the EU you are covered for emergency medical care (to a varying degree) by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

A message from Les Board of Hillingdon Mind:

I am looking to recruit possibly up to five new volunteer Appropriate Adults to start training asap. Candidates would have an informal interview at Mind office in Uxbridge. They must be mature, reliable, robust with lots of common sense and able to drive. We are on call from 0700 - 2300 seven days a week and I ask for all volunteers to do a minimum of two shifts per month that can be either days 0700 - 1700 or lates 1700 - 2300.
